{"id":1014,"date":"2025-03-29T03:27:51","date_gmt":"2025-03-29T03:27:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/clendon.sargisonfamilyhistory.com\/?page_id=1014"},"modified":"2025-04-03T02:43:35","modified_gmt":"2025-04-03T02:43:35","slug":"the-maori-clendons-of-aotearoa","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/clendon.sargisonfamilyhistory.com\/index.php\/the-maori-clendons-of-aotearoa\/","title":{"rendered":"The M\u0101ori Clendons of Aotearoa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>From the first European contacts, the role of intermediaries (kaiwhakarite) who acted as go-betweens \u2013 people from one culture who lived within the other culture and helped bridge the gap between the two became well established with the early traders and whalers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Europeans knew that there was money to be made in New Zealand from whaling, sealing, and harvesting flax and timber, and intermediaries helped smooth the way. Relationships with M\u0101ori women offered a degree of protection, as P\u0101keh\u0101 were less likely to be attacked if women were present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>See NZ History <a href=\"https:\/\/nzhistory.govt.nz\/culture\/maori-european-contact-pre-1840\/the-go-betweens\">https:\/\/nzhistory.govt.nz\/culture\/maori-european-contact-pre-1840\/the-go-betweens<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">James Reddy Clendon<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"http:\/\/clendon.sargisonfamilyhistory.com\/tng\/getperson.php?personID=I142216391235&amp;tree=clendon1\">Athough not in the first wave of traders, &nbsp;James Reddy Clendon provided a good example of a long relationship with a M\u0101ori woman, J<strong>ane Takatowi Cochrane<\/strong>, herself a descendant of a mixed family.&nbsp; Unlike many European settlers, he married a European woman and then, after her death, married a M\u0101ori woman; most did the reverse. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\" id=\"https:\/\/clendon.sargisonfamilyhistory.com\/TNG\/tngfiles15\/admin_editperson.php?personID=I152422047832&amp;tree=tree1\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/clendon.sargisonfamilyhistory.com\/TNG\/tngfiles15\/getperson.php?personID=I152422047832&amp;tree=tree1\">Jane Takatowi Cochrane<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>James and his first wife Sarah Hill had a son called James Here Stephenson Clendon (1828-1899).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"160\" height=\"160\" src=\"https:\/\/clendon.sargisonfamilyhistory.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/James-here-stephenson.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1032\" style=\"width:197px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/clendon.sargisonfamilyhistory.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/James-here-stephenson.jpg 160w, https:\/\/clendon.sargisonfamilyhistory.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/James-here-stephenson-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 160px) 100vw, 160px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>James had a relationship with Hiria Te Hana(1830-1896) although it is not clear whether it was every formalised as a marriage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They had a son, Henare Himi Clendon-Tenana (1859-1921)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>James Stephenson Clendon followed custom marrying Elizabeth Francis Williams in 1861.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Te Nana Clendons<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Te Nana name is an old  Ng\u0101ti Kuta name. An ancestor signed <a href=\"https:\/\/nzhistory.govt.nz\/node\/3716\">He Whakaputanga o te Rangatiratanga o Nu Tirene<\/a>&nbsp;(known in English as the Declaration of Independence of the United Tribes of New Zealand) in 1835. <a href=\"https:\/\/nzhistory.govt.nz\/politics\/declaration\/signatory\/tenana\">https:\/\/nzhistory.govt.nz\/politics\/declaration\/signatory\/tenana<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\" id=\"https:\/\/clendon.sargisonfamilyhistory.com\/TNG\/tngfiles15\/getperson.php?personID=I152526993322&amp;tree=tree1\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\" id=\"https:\/\/clendon.sargisonfamilyhistory.com\/TNG\/tngfiles15\/admin_editperson.php?personID=I152526993322&amp;tree=tree1\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/clendon.sargisonfamilyhistory.com\/TNG\/tngfiles15\/getperson.php?personID=I152526993322&amp;tree=tree1\">Henare Clendon Tenana<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Henare Himi Clendon-Tenana (1859-1921), established what is known, at least locally, as the Tenana Clendons and was one of a number of outstanding leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One was Ng\u0101ti Kuta kaum\u0101tua Matutaera Clendon. With the Arakite Trust, he led a number of excavations at Mangah\u0101wea Bay in Northland which may have been the ancestral home of the TeNana Clendons. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\" id=\"https:\/\/clendon.sargisonfamilyhistory.com\/TNG\/tngfiles15\/admin_editperson.php?personID=I152526993939&amp;tree=tree1\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/clendon.sargisonfamilyhistory.com\/TNG\/tngfiles15\/admin_editperson.php?personID=I152526993939&amp;tree=tree1\">Henare Poutawere Clendon-Tenana<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The brochure on the link following puts that settlement into historical perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hnzpt-prod-web.azurewebsites.net\/media\/qsmcv5qo\/display-mangahawea-28-1.pdf\">https:\/\/hnzpt-prod-web.azurewebsites.net\/media\/qsmcv5qo\/display-mangahawea-28-1.pdf<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">James Clendon (Himi Te Nana) Tau H\u0113nare (1911-89)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"351\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/clendon.sargisonfamilyhistory.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/james-Henare.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1030\" style=\"width:218px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/clendon.sargisonfamilyhistory.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/james-Henare.jpg 351w, https:\/\/clendon.sargisonfamilyhistory.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/james-Henare-234x300.jpg 234w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 351px) 100vw, 351px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>An outstanding leader and commanding officer of the M\u0101ori Battalion in WW2, he did not originally carry the Clendon faamily.&nbsp; His parents were &nbsp;Hera Paerata and her husband,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/teara.govt.nz\/en\/biographies\/3h15\/henare-taurekareka\">Taurekareka (Tau) H\u0113nare<\/a>. He took the Clendon name because his great grandfather was Colonel Robert Wynard who led troops against M\u0101ori \u2013 and he had an equally valid entitlement to use it. &nbsp;Claude Gladywn Wynyard Howard(1871-1946), a second cousin of William Ross 2X removed, married Kate Erridge Clendon (1839-1910).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Colonel served in South Africa also and ended as &nbsp;General Sir Robert Wynyard who as an aside had two M\u0101ori wives.<br>The life of James Clendon Tau <a href=\"https:\/\/teara.govt.nz\/en\/biographies\/3h15\/henare-taurekareka\"> H\u0113nare<\/a> is covered in the following article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><a href=\"https:\/\/teara.govt.nz\/en\/biographies\/5h15\/henare-james-clendon-tau\">https:\/\/teara.govt.nz\/en\/biographies\/5h15\/henare-james-clendon-tau<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"alignnormal\"><div id=\"metaslider-id-977\" style=\"width: 100%;
