Stage 1
The Clendons remained in England until the advent of George Clendon (1761-1839) and his wife Elizabeth Chitty (17773-1858). He was a friend of her fathers and they married on 22 January 1795.
George Clendon was born in late 1760 to early 1761 and christened on 20 Feb 1761 in St. Mary’s, which stood on Dock Road in Chatham, Kent, England. George was born to a poor family. His father Thomas was a porter at Chatham Docks, a horse jockey and a drunk. As a young boy George ran away to sea. In 1777 he bought a double vault at St. George’s Church, Deal with Gideon Chitty, his future father-in-law. George married Elizabeth Chitty (daughter of Gideon Chitty and Elizabeth Bayly) on 22 Jan 1795 in Deal, Kent, England. George was a Cinque Port Pilot first at Dover and then Deal, in 1819 and was the holder of a Trinity House Licence. He became prosperous.
They had 11 children who survived until adulthood.. Her children were only in the same room once, some time in 1815/16. By 1820 they were scattered. Six emigrated or worked abroad as in the case of Lt Thomas Clendon who went out to India with his wife Frances Bowen who died there in 1835. Thomas was a Bombay Marine Midshipman May 19 1819, 2nd Lieut Nov 10 1824. From Oct 1819 to Dec 1824 he served on the ship “Benares”. From Dec 1825 to Oct 1826 he was on sick leave. Promoted Lieutenant 23 June 1828 and he was in Bombay by Sept. In Dec was Signal Officer at Light House, Dec 1829 was Acting Boat Master. From Dec 1830 -Dec 1836 he was in charge of Hastings Receiving Ship, by Dec 1837 was on sick leave and died in 1838.
The others went to USA. Australia and New Zealand, establishing significant families which helped over time to move the preponderance of the family from the UK to those countries and in particular New Zealand.

Stage 2
There was a similar exodus later in the same century with the family of Willis Henry Willian Clendon (1851-1923) and Nancy Withell (1850-1933). Henry was born in Chelsea, Middlesex and died in Aston RegD, Warwickshire. Nancy came from Goodmanham, Yorkshire and died in Vancouver, Canada. They had seven children, mostly born in Hamdsworth, Staffordshire, England. Four at least went to Canada and one to Australia.
